Hiking Makes You Happy!
Nestled among the mountains and forests of the Märkisches Sauerland, the town of Meinerzhagen lies at the foot of the Ebbe Mountains in the Sauerland-Rothaar Mountains Nature Park.

With over 300 km of trails, the meadows, forests, and mountains invite you to take long hikes. It’s no coincidence that the “Sauerland-Höhenflug” long-distance hiking trail begins in Meinerzhagen; it leads all the way to Korbach in Hesse, and guided ranger hikes are also offered along the route. But the “Wanderbare M”—a multi-stage hiking trail that connects Meinerzhagen’s most beautiful sights—and the Meinerzhagen City Walk, with its numerous historical and cultural information panels along the way, are sure to make every hiker’s heart beat faster. Those who want to delve even deeper into the local flora and fauna will find plenty to enjoy on the WaldAktivPfad in the southern part of town or on the Moorerlebnispfad in the headwaters of the Lister River, known as the “Grundlose.” With numerous springs and three picturesque reservoirs, the theme of “water” is ever-present in Meinerzhagen.
Sports enthusiasts can burn off some energy on one of the three signposted Nordic walking loops, watch ski jumping training on the Meinhardus-Mattenschanzen, or cheer on the local soccer club, RSV Meinerzhagen, at a home game in the stadium on Oststraße. In the summer, too, you can cool off at one of the two outdoor pools or on the beaches along the Lister Reservoir.
On snowy days, cross-country skiers can enjoy the freshly groomed Ebbekamm trail at Nordhelle, and downhill skiers can use the ski lift in Hardenberg. Of course, there are also numerous toboggan runs where even younger winter enthusiasts can have a great time.
Those who prefer to take it easy can visit the 13th-century Romanesque Church of Jesus Christ or (by appointment) the Knochenmühle in Mühlhofe. Meinerzhagen’s cultural program regularly draws visitors with top-notch concerts and shows at the Stadthalle, as well as readings and exhibitions at the historic Villa im Park. Recurring events and festivals, such as the Schützenfest, the Wine Festival, the Musiktreff, the Children’s and Youth Festival, or the Children’s Carnival at the town hall, are always highlights for young and old alike.
